Liverpool make one-in, one-out transfer decision as Jurgen Klopp draws up summer plans

Liverpool would be open to letting Dejan Lovren leave Anfield in the summer transfer window as long as they can sign a player in his place. According to Sky Sports, the Reds would be keen to listen to offers for Lovren but won’t take any rash decisions as they will need to get a replacement in first.

The centre-back, whose contract at Anfield runs out on June 30, 2021, has fallen down the pecking order in defence behind Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

The Croatia international has been subjected to a lot of criticism ever since his arrival from Southampton in 2014 due to a raft of howlers he has committed on the pitch.

The 30-year-old’s only league start this year occurred in February when the Merseysiders lost 3-0 to Watford at Vicarage Road, which marked their only Premier League loss of the season so far.

Therefore, Lovren may struggle to keep his place at Liverpool next season and a move away from Merseyside could be possible at this point.

But Jurgen Klopp will want to line up someone to fill in his position first as he is looking to maintain a compact squad next season in his bid to defend the Premier League title.

The Premier League champions appear to have also adopted the same stance in regards to Xherdan Shaqiri, who has also been linked with a move away.

Shaqiri has attracted interest from a host of potential suitors ahead of the summer transfer window, such as Sevilla, CSKA Moscow and Roma.

And, according to former Premier League ace Danny Mills, Liverpool won’t consider letting him go unless they can find an affordable alternative.

Mills recently said: “There has been a lot of talk of him moving on.

“He might be one that goes but it depends on who Liverpool can bring in to bolster the attack.

“If they can find someone in this market then they may well sell him.

“But he only cost £13million. That is very, very cheap so he has not cost Liverpool much at all.

“We do not know when the transfer window will be and if teams will spend money so a lot of teams will hold fire and get through to the end of the season before they make any rash decisions.”
