Milan legend Costacurta asked to come off after 15 mins against Messi

AC Milan legend Alessandro Costacurta reveals 15-minute nightmare against 16-year-old Lionel Messi made him ask to come off… with ex-Italy star branding striker ‘more of a genius’ than Diego Maradona

  • Alessandro Costacurta played 458 games for AC Milan and is a club legend
  • He has recalled playing a young Lionel Messi when Argentine was breaking in
  • Costacurta said Messi ‘did what he wanted’ and defender asked to be subbed
  • He went on to add that Messi is more of the genius than Diego Maradona

Legendary Italian defender Alessandro Costacurta has revealed that 15 minutes up against a 16-year-old Lionel Messi was enough to ask to be subbed off.

Costacurta, who played 458 times for AC Milan and earned more than 50 caps for his country, lined up against the Argentine when he was just starting to break through for Barcelona.

The future six-time Ballon d’Or winner would run the defender ragged on that day to the point where he asked manager Carlo Ancelotti to come off.

Legendary former AC Milan star Alessandro Costacurta recalled playing Lionel Messi briefly

Costacurta said Messi could ‘do what he wanted’ and the defender asked to be substituted

He told Marca: ‘I faced Messi when he was only 16 years old. At first I saw him as a child and did what he wanted.

‘After a quarter of an hour I had to ask Ancelotti to replace me.’

Costacurta also weighed in on the eternal debate comparing Messi with another Argentine great, Diego Maradona, who he also played against.

He witnessed Maradona’s abilities first hand when the diminutive forward lined up for Napoli.

But the 54-year-old former centre-back believes it is the younger man who is a better player, with the added caveat that the Barcelona star is given more protection from referees.

He went on: ‘They are similar because of their genius and the way they express themselves on the field, but Messi is more genius than Maradona.

‘The difference is that we could do 66 fouls to Maradona before being warned. With Leo it is different, football is now something else.’

The Barcelona star is currently preparing for LaLiga’s return to competition this month

Inter Milan 'offer three-year deal to Edinson Cavani'

Inter Milan ‘offer three-year deal to Edinson Cavani’ as they sneak ahead of Atletico Madrid, Manchester United and Newcastle in race for PSG star

  • Inter Milan are thought to be leading the race to sign PSG striker Edinson Cavani
  • The forward is out of contract in June with several clubs chasing his signature
  • Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and Newcastle have also been linked
  • But a longer and secure deal could be more tempting for the 33-year-old

Inter Milan are leading the race to sign Edinson Cavani after offering the striker a three-year deal, according to reports.

The Paris Saint-Germain star, who is out of contract this summer, has been linked with a move to Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and Newcastle but could be on his way to Serie A.

According to French outlet L’Equipe, Antonio Conte’s side are prepared to offer him a secure future with a three-year deal.

Inter Milan are leading the race to sign Edinson Cavani after offering him a three-year-deal

The PSG striker is out of contract this summer and has been linked with several different clubs

It would be a bold move by the Italians with Cavani set to be 36 by the time the contract expired.

The report claims Inter are the favourites to secure his signature because of his previous experience in Serie A with Palermo and Napoli.

Newcastle would perhaps be able to offer him more playing time but the Italians are likely to have Champions League football next season.

A longer deal may be more tempting to the forward who would be 36 by the time it expired

Manchester United and Atletico are also in the running but the proposition of a longer deal may be more tempting.

Cavani was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea in January but a move failed to materialise and he ended up staying in Paris.

However, reports last month suggested the forward was open to extending his contract with PSG with the club looking at saving money in the transfer market.

The Uruguayan has managed seven goals and three assists in all competitions this season after featuring more heavily since the turn of the year.

France’s Ligue 1 season was cancelled at the end of April due to the pandemic with PSG being awarded the title.

AC Milan and rivals Inter given green light to tear down San Siro

AC Milan and rivals Inter given green light to tear down iconic San Siro as Serie A giants move a step closer to building joint-funded 60,000-seater arena as part of £1.1BILLION proposal

  • AC Milan and Inter Milan are planning to build a new joint-funded stadium
  • City rivals want 60,000-seater state-of-the-art arena on the San Siro site
  • They moved closer to ambition with green light to knock stadium down

Italy’s heritage authority has given the green light to tearing down the iconic San Siro arena.

Their decision removes a major obstacle to AC and Inter Milan’s plans to replace it with a new stadium.

Both Milan clubs, respectively owned by U.S. fund Elliott and Chinese electronic retailer Suning, last year filed a request to jointly build a new 60,000-seater stadium in the San Siro area.

The San Siro is an iconic arena shared by Inter Milan and AC Milan but it will be torn down

This mock up shows the £1.1billion redevelopment plan for the San Siro and surrounding area

The new stadium is the key element in a wider £1.1billion real estate plan for the district, which includes demolishing almost all of the historic San Siro arena, home ground of both the city’s top-flight clubs.

Although approval from heritage authorities is not the final decision, it is an important step towards implementing the plan.

According to an opinion from the authority to the Milan municipality which owns the site, the arena does not have any architectural significance that would prevent its demolition.

Inter and AC Milan want a joint-funded project to build a new 60,000-seater stadium

They plan on spending £1.1billion on redevelopment and the stadium is a key part of that

Following several redevelopments, only a small remnant of the oldest part of the stadium, built in 1926, is left.

The clubs and the municipality have been in talks for months to try to find a compromise over plans to replace the nearly century-old arena, sometimes dubbed ‘La Scala del Calcio’ – a reference to Milan’s famous opera house.

City representatives, including Milan’s mayor Giuseppe Sala, had repeatedly questioned plans to tear down San Siro and the clubs have modified initial projects which would have seen the entire stadium demolished.

Plans under discussion include tearing down most of the old arena but keeping part of it as a kind of city landmark around which the clubs would build new sport facilities available to the public.

The ground is sometimes called ‘La Scala del Calcio’ – a reference to the famous opera house

Romelu Lukaku says ’23 out of 25′ Inter Milan players showed coronavirus symptoms last year

Romelu Lukaku says “23 out of 25” players in Inter Milan’s first-team squad had coronavirus symptoms at the end of 2019 but were not tested for the virus.

Italy is among the worst-affected countries amid the coronavirus pandemic, with the country’s first official cases reported on January 31.

  • Lukaku on PL return, Greenwood & Conte
  • Barca offer players in bid for Inter’s Lautaro Martinez

No members of the Inter Milan squad have confirmed to have had the virus, but in an Instagram Live interview with Belgian television channel VIER, Lukaku said players returned from time off with what appeared to be symptoms weeks before the virus had taken hold.

“We had a week off in December, we returned to work and I swear that 23 out of 25 players were ill. I am not kidding,” said the Belgium international.

“We played against Radja Nainggolan’s Cagliari (on January 26) and after about 25 minutes, one of our defenders had to leave the pitch. He could not continue and almost fainted.”

Though his name was not mentioned by Lukaku, Milan Skriniar was substituted after 17 minutes of that game.

Romelu Lukaku doubts Premier League return, Mason Greenwood praise and discusses Antonio Conte

Romelu Lukaku says he doubts he will return to the Premier League but hinted at a future move to the MLS or former club Anderlecht.

Lukaku played for four different clubs in the Premier League before sealing a move to Italy when he left Manchester United for Inter Milan in a £73m deal last summer.

  • Notebook: Kane not on Man Utd wishlist but Sancho is

He scored 113 goals in 252 matches for United, Everton and West Brom. He made just two league appearances for Chelsea.

Lukaku was asked in a Twitter Q&A: “Will you ever play in the Premier league again & will it be back at Everton?”

He replied: “I don’t think so but I loved my time at Everton for real.”

The 26-year-old did hint at future moves to the United States or back to Belgium, where he began his career.

Asked if he would consider playing in the MLS, he responded with a ‘thinking’ emoji.

When asked about following in Vincent Kompany’s footsteps and returning to Anderlecht, he replied: “For sure.”

Lukaku praises Greenwood

Lukaku appears to be keeping an eye on his former clubs.

When asked who he rates as the best young player at United, he singled out 18-year-old Mason Greenwood – who has 12 goals in 36 appearances.

“That boy cold,” said Lukaku.

Lukaku picked out Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount when asked the same question of Chelsea, and was keen to point out his appreciation for both of his former clubs.

“Both experiences were good,” he said. “One club gave me an opportunity to come to England and learn from my idols.

“The other came at the right for me to make a step up and play in the Champions League.

“[Playing at Old Trafford is] something you can’t describe.”

Lukaku: Conte gave best team talk

Lukaku says current manager Antonio Conte has given the most inspiring team talk in his career, despite having played under Jose Mourinho, Ronald Koeman and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He added: “When we were 2-0 down against AC Milan. He didn’t scream at all, he told us what to do and where to find space and we did the business.”

Inter Milan 'looking into possible deal for Everton striker Kean'

Inter Milan ‘looking into possible deal for Everton striker Moise Kean’ as they look to replace Barcelona-bound Lautaro Martinez as Juventus ‘add Napoli’s Arkadiusz Milik to shortlist’

  • Kean has scored just one goal for Everton since £25m move from Juventus
  • Inter Milan are reportedly interested as they look to replace Lautaro Martinez
  • Their CEO Beppe Marotta knows Kean, 20, well from his time at Juventus
  • Meanwhile, Juventus ‘have shortlisted Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik’

Inter Milan ‘are looking into a possible deal for Everton striker Moise Kean’ as they look to replace the outgoing Lautaro Martinez this summer.

Martinez has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona and Inter are assessing their options to replace a player who has scored 16 goals this season.

According to Italian newspaper Tuttosport, the experienced figures of Dries Mertens and Olivier Giroud are under consideration.

Italian newspaper Tuttosport report Inter Milan’s interest in signing Everton striker Moise Kean and Juventus’ chase of Napoli forward Arkadiusz Milik

Moise Kean has scored just one goal for Everton since his £25million signing from Juventus

But 20-year-old Italy international Kean, who only joined Everton from Juventus last August, has also emerged as an option.

Kean has scored just one goal in 26 appearances for the Toffees as he has struggled to live up to his £25million transfer fee.

The striker is well known to Inter chief executive Beppe Marotta from their time together at Juventus and Kean’s name cropped up in a recent conversation between Marotta and the player’s agent Mino Raiola.

Arkadiusz Milik (right), the Napoli forward, is being considered by Juventus

Tuttosport also report that Juventus are considering Napoli’s Arkadiusz Milik as they look to bolster their forward line this summer.

The 26-year-old Poland international is well known to Juventus manager Maurizio Sarri after their time together at the Stadio San Paolo.

It seems unlikely that Milik will extend a Napoli contract that expires next year and Juventus have reportedly put him on their shortlist alongside Mauro Icardi and Gabriel Jesus.

AC Milan 'reject invitation to sign Adam Lallana'

AC Milan ‘reject invitation to sign Adam Lallana’ with Liverpool midfielder’s contract set to expire at the end of the season

  • AC Milan have reportedly turned down the opportunity to sign Adam Lallana
  • The 31-year-old midfielder’s Liverpool deal will expire at the end of June
  • Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has expressed his uncertainty over Lallana’s future

AC Milan have turned down the chance to sign Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana, according to reports in Italy.

Rossoneri have been scouring the market in hope of making thrifty summer signings, and Italian outlet Calciomercato.com claims Lallana has been offered to the Serie A club.

However, Milan do not see the player as a ‘first-rate opportunity’ to add value to their their squad.

AC Milan have reportedly turned down an opportunity to sign Adam Lallana on a free transfer

Lallana’s Liverpool contract is set to expire at the end of June and his release would put an end to his six-year association with the Merseyside club.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp wanted Lallana to sign a one-year contract extension, but it is increasingly likely the 31-year-old will become a free agent at the end of the season.

Speaking in November, Klopp said: ‘I don’t know what happens in May—for anybody, actually—but the best thing as a footballer is when you get the opportunity to play well, to do so. That is what Adam is doing.’

Lallana has registered 22 goals and 22 assists in 178 Liverpool appearances since sealing a £25million move from Southampton in July 2014.

In addition, he has scored three goals in 34 England appearances, making his international debut in the 2-0 friendly defeat by Chile in November 2013.

Lallana celebrates scoring his crucial equalising goal against Manchester United in October

Inter Milan 'want Griezmann in swap deal with Barcelona for Martinez'

Inter Milan ‘want Antoine Griezmann in swap deal with Barcelona for Lautaro Martinez’ as Italian giants hold firm in battle over their prized asset

  • Inter Milan want a swap deal involving Antoine Griezmann for Lautaro Martinez
  • Barcelona are desperately trying to sign the Argentine striker this summer
  • They see him as the long-term replacement for Luis Suarez as the main striker
  • Reports also suggest Barcelona could offer his release clause plus Arturo Vidal

Inter Milan want Antoine Griezmann in a sensational swap deal with Barcelona for striker Lautaro Martinez.

Barcelona see the Argentine as the long-term successor to Luis Suarez and he is their priority transfer target this summer.

The 22-year-old arrived in Milan just two years ago for £19.5million from Argentine side Racing Club and still has three years left on his current deal with Inter.

La Gazzetta dello Sport claim Inter would consider swapping Lautaro Martinez with Antoine Griezmann

And Inter are reluctant to let their prized asset go though after he has emerged as one of their key players thanks to 16 goals across all competitions so far this season.

But, according to Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport on Tuesday, Inter would consider a swap deal with the Catalan giants if it was to include Griezmann.

The Frenchman only moved to the Nou Camp last summer for £108m after drawn out negotiations with Atletico Madrid.

But his form has been far from consistent, with just 14 goals in 37 appearances, and his failure to strike up a partnership with Lionel Messi has led some to consider his future already.

It is thought Barcelona want Martinez to slot in alongside Messi and Griezmann and provide competition for Suarez before he calls time on his playing career so it remains to be seen if they would consider Inter’s proposal.

Barcelona are desperate to sign Martinez, the man they expect to vill Luis Suarez’ void

Griezmann has struggled to form a partnership with Lionel Messi in his first year at Barcelona

Barcelona would be willing to throw midfielder Arturo Vidal into the deal though, according to Corriere dello Sport.

They claim Barcelona are willing to meet Martinez’s €111million (£97m) release clause and are willing to involve the Chilean midfielder in the deal.

While reports continuously link Martinez away from the club, Inter’s vice-president Javier Zanetti believes the striker is ‘happy’ at the club and is confident they can keep hold of the Argentine.

‘At Inter I see him happy, he identifies with the club,’ Zanetti told ESPN

‘We believed in him. I see his future at Inter.’

AC Milan rival Beckham's Inter Miami in pursuit of David Silva

AC Milan rival David Beckham’s Inter Miami in pursuit of Manchester City star David Silva… as Italian side ‘meet with playmaker’s agent over a move’

  • AC Milan have met with David Silva’s representatives to discuss a summer move
  • Inter Miami owner David Beckham has also identified Silva as a potential signing
  • The Spaniard is expected to leave Manchester City when his deal expires in June

David Beckham’s Inter Miami are competing with AC Milan for the signature of Manchester City star David Silva, according to Corriere dello Sport.

Reports in Italy claim Milan have already entered talks to sign the Spaniard when his City contract expires in the summer.

The 34-year-old has enjoyed 10 successful seasons in England but is expected to depart the Etihad Stadium, and Milan have contacted the player’s representatives with view to completing a free transfer.

AC Milan, Inter Miami and New York City are battling it out to sign David Silva on a free transfer

Appearances: 28

Goals: 3

Assists: 8

However, Beckham’s Inter Miami have been looking to make a stellar signing since playing their first ever game in March and have identified Silva as a target.

Fellow MLS club New York City FC are also interested in the Spain international. As a club owned by Manchester City, this relationship could be conducive to a deal.

In 2018 Silva first outlined plans to leave City when he told BBC Sport: ‘It depends how I feel physically and mentally.

‘I’ve always wanted to play for Las Palmas – my local team. But we’ll see how things go in two years and take it from there.’

Inter Miami chief David Beckham is planning to make a marquee signing in the summer

Silva’s contract expires on June 30 but it is unlikely Las Palmas – currently 15th in Spain’s second tier – will be able to afford his wages.

Moreover, the indefinite suspension of all football caused by the coronavirus pandemic could lead to temporary contract extensions and a new end date to the season.

Alternatively, if the 2019-20 campaign were to be expunged it would deny Silva a Manchester fond farewell.

Silva has won 13 trophies in a City shirt, including four Premier League titles, two FA Cup triumphs and five League Cup winners’ medals.

AC Milan 'are lining up £35m deal to sign Arsenal star Lucas Torreira'

AC Milan ‘are preparing £35m deal to sign Arsenal star Lucas Torreira’ after missing out on the midfielder last year and hope to ‘drive him away from London’ this summer

  • Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira will be targed by AC Milan again, reports claim
  • Milan failed in a move to sign him last summer but are  readying a £35m bid
  • The Uruguayan has struggled for game time at the Emirates in recent months
  • A return to Italy could help jumpstart his career after success with Sampdoria

AC Milan are ready to reignite their interest in Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira after missing out on him last year, and are readying a £35million deal to tempt the Gunners, according to reports from Italy.

The Uruguayan signed for the Gunners in 2018 for £30m with hopes of becoming the tough-tackling player they had been craving to break up attacks and add some steel in the middle of the park.

His career in north London got off to a good start, playing 34 league games last season, but has found game-time hard to come by under Mikel Arteta recently.

Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira will be the target of a £35m bid from AC Milan, reports claim

And the Rossoneri now have plans to rescue Torreira and offer him a route back to Italy, Correire dello Sport claim.

Torreira announced himself to the rest of the world with some impressive displays at Sampdoria after joining them from Pescara in 2016 and could be swayed by the opportunity to return to the league that launched his career.

Milan are known admirers of the 24-year-old and want to come back to the table with another bid after coming up short in an attempt to snare him last summer, the report says, adding that Torreira ‘would appreciate a return to Italy’ and ‘knows that he could make a difference in their midfield’.

The Uruguayan star (R) made a name for himself during his time in Serie A with Sampdoria

It adds that Torreira has ‘often sent positive signals through his agent to Milan’ and the Italian giants are now waiting for the right moment to strike up talks with Arsenal in the hopes of ‘driving him away from London’.

The coronavirus pandemic will cause problems for many teams when the transfer window eventually opens, and Milan will have to stump up £35m to secure his signature.

But the Rossoneri are seeking someone of Torreira’s ability to strengthen their midfield options and bring back Champions League football.

He was ruled out for the season after fracturing his ankle in the FA Cup against Portsmouth

In the games before the virus shut down football, Arsenal boss Arteta often plumped for Dani Ceballos and Granit Xhaka in central midfield, and the Spaniard also has Matteo Guendouzi to call upon.

Torreira suffered a bad injury in March against Portsmouth in the FA Cup, making his goal of regular football even more difficult to achieve.

He was virtually ruled out for the rest of the season with an ankle fracture – but could now feature in the remaining games should the campaign be completed over the summer.
